In Conversation with Paul Edwards, Director of SITE Architecture Studio
How did you get started?
Building and designing have always fascinated me. I studied architecture at Curtin University, during which time I worked part-time drafting and running small projects for a local practice. After I graduated, that firm offered me a full-time position and I’ve never looked back.
What are some of your influences?
I’m driven to create some kind of emotional response through my designs. For me, architecture is about much more than implementing a functional plan. It’s about the feeling a space can evoke and the experiences that can be enjoyed within that space. Whilst I do draw inspiration from Europe and the east coast of Australia, we also have great architecture right here in Western Australia.
You have a range of civic, education, aged care, and private sector clients. What makes your design process so successful?
I always respond to the culture and context of each individual site. Myself and my team research the spirit of a place and then test design solutions against that context. A new building will endure the test of time, provided its design embeds layers of meaning from its past.
Can you talk about how you design for the unique topography and climate of WA?
At the very beginning of each project, we conduct extensive research. We walk the site, inspect the soil and review the native flora and fauna. This helps us to understand the site’s micro-climate. Our overarching goal is to utilise design to take best advantage of Western Australia’s physical environment.
What is one of the biggest challenges you have overcome as an architect?
As an architect, I’m constantly challenging myself to be a better communicator. I need to communicate my ideas effectively so my clients understand how each individual design process impacts our overall vision.
Where do you live and what do you love about it?
I live in the suburbs near Fremantle and we’re surrounded by markets, cafes, bars and galleries. Our neighbourhood is quite bohemian and I love being a part of such an eclectic and friendly community.
