SITE were commissioned in December 2018 by the City of Cockburn as Lead Consultant including the undertaking of the design and documentation for the redevelopment of The Wetlands Centre Cockburn (TWCC), Native Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Native ARC) and Bibra Lake Scouts buildings and other infrastructure located within the area collectively known as the Wetlands Precinct located at Bibra Lake Reserve.
Working closely with the City and the various stakeholders, SITE have designed a precinct to meet the City’s vision of a state of the art integrated sustainable environmental, wildlife protection and community engagement hub for existing and future residents of the City of Cockburn and surrounding suburbs.
The new buildings and extensions are connected through the use of a consistent architectural language, with common materials and detailing used throughout. Simple, building forms with softening curved elements are designed to introduce a new site architectural typology that is sympathetic to the existing structures and brings them together in a cohesive precinct. Metal wall and roof cladding in colours that reflect the natural bush are combined with feature rammed earth walls that define the entrances and offer opportunities for wayfinding and artistic expression through its colour, form, and texture. Formal paths between the buildings will reflect the colours and material used in the rammed earth to further connect the architecture with the landscape.
Construction has commenced and is due for completion in early 2021.
